TIA Gets it Right The
16 November, 2004 edition of the Zeitgeist e-Zine. While we’re guilty of the occasional rant, we are just as committed to jumping up and down in glee when somebody gets it right. Thus, it is, as we congratulate San Francisco CVB CEO John Marks and his search committee for hitting an unabashed grand slam with their selection of Roger Dow as the next president of TIA. We set the bar pretty high for what we wanted to see in the next leader of the perennially underfunded industry association in our June 16th communiqué. We said that the next TIA CEO needed to be a charismatic communicator. Roger is all that…and then some, as anybody who has seen him work a stage can attest. We wanted someone who had been in the front lines of the industry. I think being the Sr. VP of Marriott’s global sales force qualifies. And, as to our wish for someone who’s not afraid to go to the mat to represent the $555 billion travel industry, I have no doubt we’ve got our man. It’s a new day at TIA…and I, for one, am pretty excited at the prospects. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And now for something completely different: Tourism officials in Australia’s Northern Territory are cautiously optimistic that the crocodile mauling of a teenager earlier this month will result in increased tourism in the months ahead. This, after the Chair of the Tourism Department of Charles Darwin University pointed out that visitation increased after a crocodile killed a German tourist in the Kakadu National Park in 2002. According to the Department’s Dr. Pascal Tremblay, the TV coverage of the attack increased interest in the Northern Territory by Europeans. I’m sure the 70,000 crocodiles that call the State their home couldn’t be happier. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the ongoing saga of Florida CVB’s turning to unique approaches in an effort to counter the “Jim Cantore Effect” (chronicled in our last post), Sarasota’s Virginia Haley is resorting to a tried but true tactic…word of mouth. Even though Sarasota was spared during the historic 4 ‘cane attack, national media coverage left many outside of Florida believing that the entire State was boarded up. So, Virginia’s Bureau launched a campaign to encourage residents to forward an e-mail (available on the CVB site) to all their friends and relatives. From coverage on Tampa Bay’s 10TV to a gathering of community leaders (during which County Commissioners demonstrated how easy it was to send the e-invitations), the CVB resonated with the community and the consumer in one very cool move. You can see the e-mail (and send it to your friends if you like) at sarasotafl.org/charming. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And finally, the long awaited (well, for me, anyway) release of my first book occurred last week. Entitled Destination Leadership for Boards, the title pretty much sums it up. It’s a book for DMO/CVB Boards. If you think (like I think) that your Board could use a little firin’ up, you may want to consider this as the spark. You can, as they say, “read all about it” (and check out a sample chapter) at DestinationLeadership.com. Til next time, Bill Wanna comment on this or other topics. E-mail Me!
