IACVB Cranks it Up to "11"

The 19 July 2004 edition of the Zeitgeist e-Zine

What a fabulous way to celebrate a 90th Birthday.

As I fly back from Boston and reflect upon the just completed IACVB Annual Convention, my head is simply spinning. And it's not from the after-hours revelries I shared with many of my industry friends. It was the sheer content of this year's event.

It's not just that Michael Gehrisch and Company staged a great set of educational sessions. It's what's happening behind the scenes as well. For those that missed a golden opportunity to learn from and network with industry peers, here's a quick synopsis of the way cool things that are unfolding:

The Convention, Group and Marketing Performance Measurement Initiatives have been approved by the IACVB Board. For the first time, the DMO industry has a set of uniform guidelines and measures with which it can more accurately monitor its own performance against industry standards AND communicate its performance to outside stakeholders.

The long-awaited ExPact Study is completed. Like Performance Measures, the economic impact formulas that will be released later this year will finally offer a common ground for DMO reporting so the entire industry can talk apples to apples when we talk turkey with those that invest in and monitor our program of work.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is evolving into a huge advocate for travel and tourism promotion with its members across the country. USCOM Director Tom Cochran again pledged his support in continuing to communicate the need for our Mayors to embrace tourism as an essential economic and community development tool.

And, possibly most importantly, the Brand Leadership campaign is beginning to take serious shape. For those of us in the audience for Duane Knapp's progress update, it's pretty clear that the letters C-V-B are not in our future...at least not in the way that we've used them in the past. And that's OK, because we're the only ones that know what they mean!

As I reflect, it's been a long, strange trip since that disastrous and contentious convention in Detroit in 1996. Over the past few years, IACVB events have evolved from being a social event to a serious and content-rich extravaganza of ideas. And the organization has started to develop the first real actionable tools for its members since the development of CINET.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be going deeper into many of the ideas that were shared at this years conference. For those that were there, I hope these e-zines will be a reminder of the great ideas that were shared. For those that weren't, I hope this motivates you to attend the 91st in San Diego.

Stay tuned. In true "Spinal Tap" form, IACVB has just cranked the knob to "11."
